'Visit With Hades' For Sale!

Oh, and I almost forgot!

Due to its being included in the 2010 Monsters and Dames book which will be debuting this weekend at Emerald City Comicon, the original black-and-white artwork for my Ellie piece "A Visit With Hades" will be up for auction as part of their fundraiser! The piece is 14"x17", drawn with blue-line pencil and india ink, just like the actual pages of the book (but with far more detail!) I'm not planning on releasing many *original* pieces of Ellie art up for sale, just these occasional stand-alone pieces, and this will be your only chance to get it!

I except each and every one of you to take out multiple mortgages in a vain attempt to snatch this piece of art from the clutches of the Museum of Modern Art. That's all!

Emerald City Comicon 2010

The Emerald City Comicon is right around the temporal corner, and to help you find me in the labyrinthine exhibit hall, I've put together this handy map, with a few noteworthy placemarkers to help guide you!

I'll be exhibiting at table G-05 in the Artist's Alley section, way in the back of the hall alongside my studiomates! Sarah Oleksyk will be debuting the final chapter in her magnum opus Ivy, and Les McClaine will be showing off pages of the recent run of The Tick which he's been working on. I'm debuting a couple pieces of official Ellie merchandise, like the badges I previewed earlier, and a black and white preview of Eye of the Vortex containing the first 20-pages in an easy-to-lend booklet! Also, my assistant Kim Probable will be on-hand doing live Tarot readings, so be sure to come and say Howdy!

Gaslight (1944)

I finally discovered this little gem this week, a murder mystery set in Victorian London, with all the psychological drama you'd expect from an adaptation of a stage play. Set largely in a single home in a London square, Gaslight tells the story of a woman being slowly driven mad by the haunting memories of her opera-star aunt's murder years earlier, and the related mystery of some missing jewels. I picked it up initially based on the title, and was pleased to discover that it featured Joseph Cotten (who also featured in Citizen Kane and The Third Man, two of my favorite 40s films), and Ingrid Bergman, an actor the bulk of whose work I'm embarrassingly unfamiliar with (Casablanca, I think, is the only film of hers I'd previously seen). The standout of the film, though, is an excellently tarty 17-year old Angela Lansbury in her feature debut as the snarky, street-wise housemaid Nancy (for which she was justifiably nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar).

The plot was a little light, but it was focused in a way that many thriller/mysteries have forgotten, but the thing that makes this movie a keeper for me, and a recommendation for any fan of Victoriana, is the magnificent costume and set design. Corsets abound, and the wide variety of formalwear, walking dresses, police wear, cabs and citizenry, kept my eyes and mind glued to this movie as it played out. Definitely one to add to my collection.

Any other Victorian-set films that I'm missing out on?

New Ellie Connelly Badges!

Here's a quickie sneak-peak at a new set of Ellie Connelly badges I'm working up to debut at Emerald City Comicon next month! It's a set of four 1-inch badges, and they'll be available either with pin-backs or as magnets. If you're coming to ECCC, come by my table (G-05 in Artists Alley!) and pick up a set of badges and some other goodies, including a to-be-announced convention exclusive Ellie badge! And if you can't make it, don't worry, the badge set and other new items will be available in the Lunarbistro.com store right after the convention!

Page 22

Sorry for the lack of a new comic this morning! I think my momentum was broken by page 21 in some respects, and I had a hard time getting it back this week. But, page 22 is fully drawn and cleaned up, and I laid in most of the flat colors yesterday. I'll be getting to work on it again in a couple hours, and should be able to have today's update ready by noon Pacific. Besides, there are plenty of other great comics you can go check out in the meantime!

Update! Just finished up the top tier and posted it. I'll get the rest of next week's comics up this weekend. See you Monday!
